‘Boffin’

I mentioned Durham University’s press release on the Murchison award I received for Terror and Territory a few days ago. It’s been picked up by a couple of local newspapers from Newcastle. Both pretty much reprint the press release, but their own input is in the headlines. The Journal goes with ‘Lecturer wins global recognition’; the Evening Chronicle with ‘TV star Palin honours boffin’. ‘Boffin’ is quite an old-fashioned word and to my knowledge that’s the first time I’ve ever been labelled that way.

[update: it was later picked up in the Sunderland Echo, and the Northern Echo, but both went with tamer headlines: “Academic’s Award” and “Professor’s Award”; and later by My Science]

I am sure President Palin would approve. Easily one of the 100 top public boffins!

‘President Palin’ set the alarm bells ringing… Michael, of course, not Sarah!
