Thanks to Ben Rosamond for sending me a photo of this powerful map – A Child’s World: Countries where physical abuse against children is forbidden by law.

I am not clear about this map. I support the sentiment, but many countries, including the country I live in (Turkey) have signed the UN charter on the rights of children and have implemented laws that protect children from physical abuse. There is, however, a disconnect between the application of these laws and their stated protections. This is disturbing. I have seen the physical abuse against children in schools here and have voiced my opposition to it. As is the case with violence against women, even when there are laws to protect people, the cultural norms of violence continue unabated.
Thanks for the reply. I’m sure you’re right that there is a difference between signing the charter; putting in place laws; and actually enforcing them. Persoanlly I was more struck by the way the map was constructed – the absence of places where laws were not in place (according to the map creators) – than the content.
