Foucault’s back cover text for Surveiller et punir – scan, French, English translation

Jeremy Crampton recently provided an image of the original back cover for Foucault’s Surveiller et punir, including a text signed ‘M.F.’

Front and back covers of the first edition of Michel Foucault’s ‘Surveiller et punir’ (1975)

The text has now been transcribed and translated by Philippe Theophanidis at his Aphelis blog.

Incidentally, the Gallimard Tel edition I have has an abbreviated version of this text, but without Foucault’s initials.

Thanks for this. Am currently doing a course on bio-power and have been learning about Discipline and Punish and the disciplining of the body. This post is a valuable addition to my learning.
