A roundup

Here are lots of interesting things I came across while catching up with my Google reader feeds…

Some interesting advice on the PhD application process (for the UK) – here (think I got this via New APPS).

Also advice – Graham Harman has a nice post about multiple writing projects here.

A good event: Earth-Objects and the Politics of Ecology, at the Barbican Art Gallery, 21 January 2012 – speakers include Graham Harman and Eyal Weizman.

And via Graham, here’s a call for papers –The Relevance of the Human in Politics, April 27-28, 2012. University of Dundee. Todd May as keynote. Looks good.

In the Times Higher there is a review of Sloterdijk’s Spheres I (via Peter Gratton). It’s largely negative and doesn’t tell you a great deal about the book. Somewhat of a strange choice as reviewer. The funniest line is near the start, describing him as “a kind of Jonathan Ross for the intellectually curious”.

Roland Boer has been creating a ‘typology of scholars’. That first post has a long list of types, he has followed it up with some others such as the self-seller; the put-downer; the unnoticed genius; the snob; the colonialist

Via the Verso blog: Stephen Graham was on Radio 4 Thinking Aloud recently – available on BBC iPlayer (until 11 Jan 2012 – begins about 13 minutes in). His Cities Under Siege was recently reviewed in The Guardian.

The International Boundaries Research Unit at Durham University has a facebook page.

And finally, Paul Ennis says he is closing his AHB blog. He did an interview with me back in 2009 (later collected in the book Post-Continental Voices) which was one of the first things that got me thinking of starting a blog. Thanks Paul, and good luck.

Hi Stuart, best wishes for the new year and many thanks for your always interesting blog! On another note, the Times Higher review of Sloterdijk’s Spheres link does not seem to refer to the right page. Thanks!
