Istanbul and Los Angeles

Just about to hit the road again, to conferences in Istanbul and Los Angeles. I’ll be speaking about Boko Haram in Istanbul, at a meeting of the Open Society Institute’s academic fellowship program. This gives me a chance to meet the colleagues I’ll be working with at Al Quds University in May, and other international academics who will be working with other institutions. The conference site is in Büyükçekmece, which is a long way from the centre, so not sure how much I will see.

Then I fly straight to LA for the Association of American Geographers annual conference. My main talk is entitled “Urban Territory: Violent Political Technologies in London and Kano“, but I’ll say only a little about London and mainly concentrate on the Boko Haram attacks in Kano. I’m also on panels on Sloterdijk and journal publishing. In the first I will discuss Sloterdijk’s work on the world and globalisation, mainly concentrating on In the World Interior of Capital: Towards a Philosophical Theory of Globalization and in the second I’ll say something about open access publishing in relation to Society and Space and in particular its open site.

I’ve been told University of Chicago Press will have a bound proof copy of The Birth of Territory on display for people to look at and pre-order. Looking forward to catching up with lots of people there.
