Stuart Hall Digital: Mediations of the Stuart Hall Archive

A huge amount of material from the Stuart Hall archives has been digitised.

This website hosts collections of materials digitised from Stuart Hall’s personal archive, many of which are now available to readers for the first time. The digitisation of Hall’s research notes (notebooks and index cards) allows us to understand how Hall’s ideas  developed over time, reaching back as far as the formation of his doctoral thesis, while the various audio/visual recordings of lectures, seminars, and speeches exemplify Hall’s much-lauded pedagogical practice.

These materials offer exciting new insights into the construction of the theories and methods that would become central to academic discourse in the late 20th century on race, media, communication, globalisation, politics, and more, as well as the histories of cultural studies and the New Left.

Recordings and transcripts of the Naples Seminars, a series of ten two-hour seminars delivered by Stuart Hall to students at the University “Orientale” at Naples in 1986. Through his analysis of modern political ideologies in Britain, these recordings provide a new record of Hall’s theories, methods, and pedagogical practice.

Video recordings of degree congregation ceremonies at which Hall was awarded honorary degrees in the 1990s and early 2000s, including several talks given by Hall.

Notebooks documenting Hall’s research from the 1970s to 2000. The notebooks are arranged by subject and contain notes, rough ideas, and writings that would later feed into some of Hall’s most influential works.

Index cards used in Hall’s research, dating back as far as his doctoral research in the 1950s and including reference cards, notes, diagrams, and lecture outlines on a range of topics including literature, race, media, and youth culture.

Lectures given by Hall at various conferences on theory and Black identities, the foundations and disciplinary position of cultural studies, as well as a keynote lecture by Catherine Hall recorded in 2024.

Origins of the New Left (available from Autumn 2026), a recording of a 1985 seminar given by Hall at a pub in Covent Garden, London, which outlines the history of the New Left: its major political questions, the relationship of the movement to existing political institutions, its aims and its weaknesses.
