Warwick Graduate Conference in Political Geography – Call for papers

CfP political geographyCall for Papers:

Warwick Graduate Conference in Political Geography, 28-29 November 2013

Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS), University of Warwick

Theme: ‘Politics, Spaces, Imaginations’

Keynote: Klaus Dodds (Geography, Royal Holloway)

Globalised mobilities today remind us of the inextricable relationship between politics and space, in which bodies and territories are both politically and spatially bordered through multiple technologies. Politics cannot be conceived of as a-spatial and nor can space be understood as a-political. Rather, global politics constitute a series of politico-spatialisation processes.

This two day conference seeks to open up debates on these processes that have taken place both contemporarily and historically, locally and globally, and physically and virtually, in order to bring new insights into understanding space and politics. We invite multidisciplinary contributions from PhD students and researchers whose work addresses the above issues in relation to themes such as borders and bordering practices, migration, citizenship, security, and sovereignty.

PAIS is delighted to announce the availability of three travel grants of up to £250 each for non-UK attendees. All participants should submit a title, abstract (of no more than 200 words), and institutional affiliation by 13 September 2013 to the organiser Hidefumi Nishiyama (H.Nishiyama@warwick.ac.uk).

Confirmed Warwick participants include: Claire Blencowe (Sociology), Chris Browning (PAIS), Stuart Elden (PAIS), Dora Kostakopoulou (Law), David Lambert (History), Vicki Squire (PAIS), Nick Vaughan-Williams (PAIS), Illan Wall (Law).

“Maybe there’s something wrong with our notion of paradise” — Slavoj Žižek

Žižek on contemporary events in the LRB.

Biblioklept's avatarBiblioklept

In an essay published today at the LRB, Slavoj Žižek addresses the current, disparate waves of protest around the globe and explores the

difference between a reformist and a revolutionary period: in a reformist period, global revolution remains a dream which, if it does anything, merely lends weight to attempts to change things locally; in a revolutionary period, it becomes clear that nothing will improve without radical global change.

Žižek continues:

Where do we stand today with respect to this difference? Are the problems and protests of the last few years signs of an approaching global crisis, or are they just minor obstacles that can be dealt with by means of local interventions? The most remarkable thing about the eruptions is that they are taking place not only, or even primarily, at the weak points in the system, but in places which were until now perceived as success stories…

‘Leibniz and Geography’ published

My article on Leibniz and geography is published in the new issue of Geographica Helvetica. The journal is subscription only for the first year but I can send a copy of the article if you ask.

Leibniz and geography: geologist, paleontologist, biologist, historian, political theorist and geopolitician

S. Elden
Department of Geography, Durham University, Durham, UK

Abstract. This article discusses the way that the German philosopher and mathematician Gottfried Leibniz (1646–1716) made a number of significant contributions to geography. In outlining his contributions as a geologist, palaeontologist, biologist, historian, political theorist and geopolitician, it challenges the straightforward way he is read in geography. Particular focus is on his Protogaea, the Annales Imperii and the Consilium Aegyptiacum, respectively a pre-history of the earth, a chronology of German nobility in the Middle Ages, and a military-strategic proposal to King Louis XIV. Making use of contemporary debates about ways of reading Leibniz, and drawing on a wide range of his writings, the article indicates just how much remains to be discovered about his work.

Sloterdijk in English Update

Sean Sturm has updated his really useful bibliography of Sloterdijk in English.

Sean Kohingarara Sturm's avatarTe Ipu Pakore: The Broken Vessel

I’ve updated my bibliography of Sloterdijk’s writings in English again: see the post. Not much has appeared recently, except the arrival of two monographs: The Art of Philosophy: Wisdom as a Practice (2012) and You Must Change Your Life: On Anthropotechnics (2013).
