Summer School in PostInternational Politics

GREGYNOG IDEAS LAB

Summer School in PostInternational Politics

Gregynog, 9-14 July 2012

The inaugural Gregynog Ideas Lab, a Summer School in PostInternational Politics, will take place 9-14 July, 2012. The Summer School will provide a unique opportunity for graduate students and academics to return to key texts and thinkers from critical, postcolonial, feminist, post-structural and psychoanalytic traditions, to re-examine their work and how it has been employed in international politics, and to ask whether the radical potential of this work is in danger of being lost.

A series of lectures and seminars by guest professors who are key figures in the field will be combined with discussion groups based on assigned pre-readings. Held in the unique surroundings of Gregynog Hall, the Summer School offers a week of intensive immersion in this thought for those new to the field or isolated in their own institutions in a supportive and friendly residential environment.

Our guest professors will be:

Richard K Ashley; Diana Coole; Jenny Edkins; Naeem Inayatullah; Louiza Odysseos (tbc); Mustapha Pasha; Michael J Shapiro; Maria Stern; R.B.J. Walker; Marysia Zalewski; Maja Zehfuss

For more information about the event and on how to apply please visit: http://www.gregynog.blogspot.com/

Political Geography lecture at RGS 2012

I’ve been invited to give the Political Geography journal lecture at the 2012 Royal Geographical Society conference, which will be held in Edinburgh. The theme of the conference is ‘Security of geography/geography of security’, and so I’ve provisionally agreed that I will give a version of the lecture I’ll be giving a couple of months earlier at the University of Kentucky for the Committee on Social Theory, with the title ‘Secure the Volume: Vertical Geopolitics and the Depth of Power’. The lecture is intended to appear in a later issue of the journal. ‘Volume’ is one of the intended chapters of my planned next book, The Space of the World, so it will try out some of the ideas I have for that. I’m obviously very grateful to the editors of the journal for inviting me to do this.

Three good days in London

Three good days in London. Susan and I had a nice walk through Holland Park (easily my favourite park in London); visited the St. Paul’s occupation; had a great evening at our friends’ birthday party; saw ‘The Ides of March’ (very good); and I certainly enjoyed the Steven Wilson gig… Also some meetings on Monday at Sage on past and future projects; saw Laurence Hemming give a very interesting paper on Hegel, Marx, Heidegger and alienation and some good bookshop browsing…
