    A very amusing article! There’s definitely virtue in a degree of blunt directness in academic discourse (indeed, I think it’s essential) but that doesn’t grant anyone the right to be a bully. It is possibly to be excessively polite and some academics fall into this trap but I’d rather err on the side of kindliness than the contrary. Be forthright but don’t be an a**ehole. Most people don’t find it difficult to strike that balance. The really vicious types are generally cowards hiding behind the anonymity of peer review, the security of tenure or the privilege of masculinity.
