Why do faculty work so hard? – Inside Higher Ed essay

As I am writing this article, I should be writing something else: an email to an editor, an email to an author, a letter of recommendation, notes for tomorrow’s classes, comments on students’ papers, comments on manuscripts, an abstract for an upcoming conference, notes for one of the books I’m working on. Why do academics work so much? [Read more…]

Uma entrevista com Michel Foucault -1975 (2014)

A very interesting 1975 interview from Foucault in Brazil. This interview was retranslated into French for the Dits et ecrits collection – it appears as text number 163. It is interesting for many reasons, but especially for the extensive discussion of the idea of confession. There is no English translation published – to the best of my knowledge.

globo-Foucault Interview with Foucault conducted in 1975 published in national newspaper O GLOBO, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Uma entrevista com Michel Foucault, O Globo, 11th January 2014

Joining the Advisory Council of Durham’s Institute of Advanced Study

Building_Exterior_2The last major role I had at Durham University was as the social science director of the Institute of Advanced Study. I was very sorry to have to give this up when I moved to the University of Warwick. I’m therefore delighted to have been asked to join the Advisory Council of the IAS, along with some very eminent names. This will give me a strong link back to a remarkable academic institution – a place where thinking and genuinely interdisciplinary work are made possible and warmly welcomed.
