Some good suggestions here. To the first set I would add this: allow people to subscribe without receiving posts, if the list provides an RSS feed. If you read lots of blogs then putting a listserv feed into your reader is a time-efficient way of keeping informed, but you still need a means of posting to closed lists. And for the second set – do not send commands (i.e. unsubscribe) to the whole list!
