From October 2012 I’ll be one of the directors of the Institute of Advanced Studies at Durham. There are four directors—one for each of the faculties and an Executive Director. My role is for the Faculty of Social Sciences and Health, with additional responsibility for postgraduate involvement and links with the Queen’s Campus in Stockton-on-Tees. I’ll be based in the IAS for 25% of my time, and in the Geography department for the remainder. The IAS is housed in a 18th century grade 1 listed-building in the amazing location of Palace Green – a world heritage site with Durham Cathedral and castle. A new Executive Director, Veronica Strang, has just started, and the Faculty of Science director was advertised the same time as the one I got. The Arts and Humanities Director, Barbara Graziosi, started earlier this academic year, so it’s a new team to take the Institute forward. Should be really interesting.
I should note, again, the 2013-14 fellowships – closing date June 17th 2012. They are usually for three months, and provide an office, half-board accommodation, travel expenses, etc. The 2013-14 theme is ‘Light’, interpreted very broadly across all disciplines. The 2012-13 theme – already largely planned – is on ‘Time’.
