Update: the answer is Giorgio Agamben. He was supposed to be at a conference I attended, but cancelled, and I’ve never had another chance.
There is a Facebook meme at the moment, where people list several bands or singers, all but one of which they have seen perform live. But I like Simon Glendinning’s version. So, which one of these social theorists and philosophers have I not heard speak?
- Giorgio Agamben
- Alain Badiou
- Etienne Balibar
- Zygmunt Bauman
- Seyla Benhabib
- Manuel Castells
- Wendy Brown
- Judith Butler
- Jacques Derrida
- Umberto Eco
- Nancy Fraser
- Jürgen Habermas
- Stuart Hall
- Luce Irigaray
- Naomi Klein
- Jacques Rancière
- Richard Rorty
- Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak
- Peter Sloterdijk
- Cornel West
- Slavoj Žižek
I am going to go with good old Habermas
No, once during the PhD

Why are you leaving Jameson off your list, Stuart? I bet you’ve heard him speak. (Oh, and I’ll guess Eco.)
Oops, just saw that Agamben was the answer. Sorry.
I heard Eco – book reading with Maria Vargas Llosa and (surprise guest) Salman Rushdie while in hiding. But I’ve never heard Jameson – read quite a bit though…
