Foucault’s Lectures on the Punitive Society I

The beginning of a close reading of the new Foucault lecture course at Stockerblog. I shared my initial thoughts on the course here and here.

Last month EHESS/Gallimard/Seuil Paris published Michel Foucault’s lectures at the Collège de France in the 1972-73 academic session, in fact they all date from 1973. The edition has been prepared by Bernard Harcourt under the direction of François Ewald and Alessandro Fontana. I believe that a translation from Palgrave can be expected about two years from now. I will be posting my notes, slightly tidied up and shaped into essay form, lecture by lecture. This week we begin with the lecture of third January 1973.

Foucault picks up on a distinction made by the anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss between incorporation and exclusion of those who are awkward in some way. Foucault describes the distinction as playful, but also significantly implies that the second option is the option of the scapegoat (the religious sacrifice) while the first is as Lévi-Strauss appears to suggest, an example of cannibalism. Foucault may be thinking of…

Foucault : Magritte, Klee, Manet….

Didier Eribon on Foucault, Magritte, Klee and Manet…

Foucault – ‘Power, Moral Values, and the Intellectual’ 1980 interview online

The Foucault interview entitled ‘Power, Moral Values, and the Intellectual’ was conducted on 3 November 1980, and first published in History of the Present 4 (Spring 1988), 1-2, 11-13, although some excerpts appeared in the Berkeley student newspaper in 1980. Because it was published after Foucault’s death, it was deemed to be a ‘posthumous publication’ and therefore not included in Dits et écrits. It is listed in Jacques Lagrange, “Complément bibliographiques”, DE IV, 838; and in Richard Lynch’s bibliography in A Companion to Foucault as OT-80-04.

Colin Koopman’s Genealogy as Critique alerted me to an online version, which can be found here, posted by Michael Bess who conducted the interview. A minor, but interesting text.

Update: also available here (thanks to Clare O’Farrell in comments for the link)

Shakespearean Territories – planned book now has a dedicated page

I’ve consolidated all the links to audio recordings and other pieces on a dedicated page for the Shakespearean Territories planned book project. This project has slipped a bit recently, as I’ve been concentrating on the Foucault’s Last Decade book, but I hope to return to it soon.

Kyle McGee – Bruno Latour: The Normativity of Networks

McGee

Kyle McGee’s Bruno Latour: The Normativity of Networks was published late last year. Looks interesting, with an examination of Latour’s legal theory. It comes with two very positive endorsements, including one from Latour himself. Great shame about the price though.

Heidegger, race, calculation – more comments on the notebooks (in German)

Some interesting discussion in Die Zeit in German (see also my previous post with links to discussion in France). Especially interesting how it links the racial thought to calculation – a major theme of his work, but especially of the posthumous writings. Thanks to Peter Gratton for the link.
