Chile & the Socialist Internet – talks in London and Manchester

Details of events in Manchester and London – as part of the Spring project.

The Socialist President Salvadore Allende was elected to power in Chile in 1970, and embarked upon a series of radical reforms to Chilean society and the economy. As an alternative to a Soviet style ‘centrally planned’ economy, Allende’s government instead looked for another route through which to replace the market.

At the heart of this strategy was Project Cybersyn, a prototype internet system designed to link together the needs of the economy via ‘central nervous system’. A radical experiment in grass-roots networking, Cybersyn aimed to directly involve workers at all levels of production and distribution in the organic management of the economy.

Speaking at this event will be Nathan Coombs (Research Fellow at Edinburgh University) who will be speaking on the technological potentials of economic planning. Alongside him will be former Director of Project Cybersyn Raul Espejo, who will discuss his experiences with Cybersyn and the ‘Third Route’ to economic planning.

Two posts in Quantitative Methods at Warwick

The department of Politics and International Studies at Warwick has two job vacancies that might be of interest – an Associate Professor in Politics and International Studies (Quantitative Methods) and a Teaching Fellow in Quantitative Methods. The second post is held jointly with the Department of Sociology, and there are two other posts in Sociology itself – all listed here. These are all part of a new research and teaching development at Warwick. People with an interest in areas that PaIS specialises in, including research on political geography and geopolitics, perhaps from a critical GIS or cartography background, are encouraged to apply.

Authority and Political Technologies research network at Warwick

The Authority & Political Technologies research network at Warwick now has a webpage. This is a group started by Claire Blencowe in Sociology, which now has funding from Warwick’s Institute of Advanced Study. So far the network has been internal discussions between colleagues in a range of departments, but future events are planned with a wider audience.

Theory of the drone 11: Necro-ethics

Derek Gregory continues his series of posts on Grégoire Chamayou‘s Théorie du drone.

Derek Gregory's avatargeographical imaginations

This is the 11th in a series of extended posts on Grégoire Chamayou‘s Théorie du drone and covers the first two of three chapters that constitute Part III: Necro-ethics.

The title recalls Achille Mbembe‘s seminal essay on ‘Necropolitics’ [Public culture 15 (1) (2003) 11-40], where he cuts the umbilical cord between sovereignty and the state (and supranational institutions) and, inspired by Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben, argues that ‘the ultimate expression of sovereignty resides, to a large degree, in the power and the capacity to dictate who may live and who must die.’  Necropolitics is thus about ‘contemporary forms of subjugation of life to the power of death’ – and at the limit the creation of what Mbembe calls ‘death-worlds’.

Mbembe develops his thesis in part – and for good reason – in relation to the Israeli occupation of Palestine.  I imagine readers will know that…

Agamben and Indifference – new book by William Watkin coming soon

AgambenAgamben and Indifference, by William Watkin, coming soon with Rowman & Littlefield International:

Since the publication of Homo Sacer in 1995, Giorgio Agamben has become one of the world’s most revered and controversial thinkers. His ideas on our current political situation have found supporters and enemies in almost equal measure. His wider thoughts on topics such as language, potentiality, life, law, messianism and aesthetics have had significant impact on such diverse fields as philosophy, law, theology, history, sociology, cultural studies and literary studies. Yet although Agamben is much read, his work has also often been misunderstood. This book is the first to fully take into account Agamben’s important recent publications, which clarify his method, complete his ideas on power, and finally reveal the role of language in his overall system. William Watkin presents a critical overview of Agamben’s work that, through the lens of indifference, aims to give a portrait of exactly why this thinker of indifferent and suspensive legal, political, ontological and living states can rightfully be considered one of the most important philosophers in the world today.

[Update – the original post said this was an edited collection, not an authored book. This has now been corrected.]
